Commonwealth Games – Ones to watch, day 4

Men’s 100 Free

2014 winning time - 48.11, James Magnussen (Australia)

World record - 46.91, Cesar Cielo (Brazil)

With James Magnussen finishing forth in the Australian trials recently, the reigning champion won’t be contesting for the individual medal this time around however he will compete in the 4x100 freestyle relay which Australia are favourites for.

Kyle Charmers, the reigning Olympic Champion however finished the top of the Aussie trials. With a 48.16 at the trials, he will be heading the home nation’s campaign. With Charmers missing out on the World Championships last year for medical reasons he hasn’t been in the heat of the arena since Rio. Chalmers had a dominant 200m freestyle earlier this week and snatched the Gold from the likes of Duncan Scott and James Guy. With Chalmers on such good form is he a dead certain winner? But on the other hand, with the fastest ever textile suit swim of 47.04, could Cameron McEvoy sneak into the gold medal spot?

Of course, Britain’s Sprint King is currently Scotland’s Duncan Scott. Having finished fifth at both the Olympics and last year’s World Championships Scott is well within a shout of a medal if not even challenging for the gold! After already having swam a 48.95 already this year in January no less, Scott appears to be on flying form already.

Cameron McEvoy took the first heat with a solid 48.50 and Chad Le Clos qualified in second, closely behind with a 48.61. A mere 0.6 seconds separated the first and the last qualifier into the final so this is likely to be a very interesting race indeed!

With sprint events there are often some “outside smokers”, it is more than plausible there is someone who we haven’t even heard of who could claim one of the medals. Are there any underdogs you know about who you think could swipe one of the medals away? Let us know!
